Barcelona to Host New Architecture Innovation Hub in Poblenou

Barcelona, April 24, 2026 – The city of Barcelona is poised to become a global leader in architectural and urban technology innovation with the establishment of the Barcelona Urban Tech Hub (BUTH). This ambitious project, a collaboration between the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), the Barcelona City Council, and Barcelona Activa, will transform the historic Sibèria ice factory in Poblenou into a cutting-edge center for training, research, and innovation in architecture and urban technologies.

Strategic Urban Development and Social Housing

The new hub will be situated on a unique municipal plot at c. de Ávila, 14-18, serving a dual purpose: promoting affordable public housing and fostering innovative economic activity. Through two complementary concessions, the project will combine Barcelona’s first delegated social housing development with a dedicated space for technological innovation in construction, housing, and sustainable urban development.

IAAC to Lead the Project

The IAAC secured the public tender launched by the city council in 2023, granting them a 40-year concession to rehabilitate and revitalize the old factory. This initiative will allow IAAC to consolidate and expand its current facilities within the 22@ district, further strengthening its ties with Poblenou’s vibrant innovation ecosystem.

Facilities and Objectives of the Barcelona Urban Tech Hub

The Barcelona Urban Tech Hub will encompass approximately 5,400 square meters, achieved by expanding the two original industrial buildings. It will feature advanced training spaces, applied research laboratories, prototyping zones, and a business incubator. The primary goal is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology to the market, fostering the growth of start-ups, spin-offs, and R&D projects focused on new construction systems, sustainable materials, and innovative urban solutions.

Sustainable and Innovative Architecture

The building itself is designed to be a showcase of sustainable and innovative architecture. It will serve as a demonstration space for emerging technologies, incorporating renewable energy systems such as solar panels, and elements promoting self-production and circularity.

Poblenou: A Hub for Innovation

The choice of Poblenou for this significant project underscores the district’s growing reputation as a dynamic center for technology and innovation. The BUTH is expected to attract talent, investment, and cutting-edge research, further solidifying Barcelona’s position on the international stage as a smart, sustainable, and innovative city.

The integration of social housing within the same development highlights Barcelona’s commitment to creating inclusive urban environments where technological progress goes hand-in-hand with social responsibility. This holistic approach aims to address critical urban challenges while fostering a thriving innovation community.

The project is anticipated to generate significant economic benefits, creating jobs and stimulating growth within the local construction and technology sectors. It will also provide unparalleled educational and research opportunities for students and professionals, positioning Barcelona at the forefront of future urban development.
